Ishioka festival is the one of three larger festivals in the Kantō region. This annual festival of the Hitachinokuni Sosyagu Reitaisai (Hitachinokuni Main Shrine) usually takes place on the third Saturday to Monday, yearly in September (9/15- 9/18 in 2017). The festival is about praying for an abundant harvest and prosperity, and also it is important for all of us in the Ishioka city community to participate in order to bless our traditions and development. Over the three day period, nearly 400 thousand people make a trip to Ishioka city to enjoy a sacred event as well as an energetic and cultured environment. Ishioka is a city located in the central part of Ibaraki Prefecture, the northern Kantō region of Japan (about 80 km/50mile northeast of Tokyo).

"Reisai" is the most significant ritual, in which an annual festival of the shrine, and all rituals performed during the period are generically called "Reitaisai". At Hitachinokuni Sosyagu (Hitachinokuni Shrine), dedicated messengers attired in the highest formal dress code are sent by the association of the Shinto Shrine, and they offer rituals solemnly at 10 a.m. on the 15th of every September since 2004. It used to be held for three days around the 9th of September.

“Shinkōsai” is the first ritual where the divine spirit makes an imperial visit. The festival begins with a parade of a long line of 2,000 people who are transporting God in a portable shrine to a temporary shrine of a newly appointed district whom for a role year is assigned.

“Hōshukusai” is the main celebration event where the shrines parishioners offer hospitality and entertainment to the God. We have many fun events to celebrate our oblations with Sumo*¹, Mikoshi togyo*² and Mikomai*³ in the shrine precinct of Hitachinokuni Sosyagu*⁴. Miyuki-dori, the main shopping avenue around the station is packed with people who have a chance to enjoy parades amid a lively atmosphere of the Japanese drums and flutes; Shishimai*⁵ parade (lion dog dancing) in the afternoon and Dashi parade (festival float) in the evening.

*¹Sumo: Japanese traditional wrestling
*²Mikoshi togyo: A parade of Mikoshi - portable shrines, and priests for the divine spirits in the portable shrine moving to other places from the main shrine
*³Mikomai: A type of dance performed by the shrine maidens in a Kagura performance (a sacred music and dancing performance dedicated to the Shinto gods)
*⁴Hitachinokuni Sosyagu: the main shrine
*⁵Shishimai:one of the traditional Japanese performing arts, in which performers mimic a lion's movements in a lion costume to festival music

“Kankōsai” is the last important ritual whereby the spirit of the God is returning from a temporary shrine in the assigned district to the main enshrinement in Hitachinokuni Sosyagu. The shrine parishioners participate as carriers of the portable shrine and parade through each of the districts to Hitachinokuni Sosyagu. An annual rotation is taken over to a next district as soon as the God returns to the place of enshrinement. The energy and sound of festival music peaks until late night and everyone always wishes that the festival does not come to closure.

We have been following an annual rotation system that a district is assigned to serve the festival and related events thru a year, currently 15 districts of the following contribute. This system was implemented at the Ishioka city hall on August 29th, 1902. The district of Kinoji-cho resigned in 1954. Any district that is chosen to be in charge, plays the most important role for a whole year; contributing to Hitachinokuni Sosyagu, being a chairperson, facilitating a temporary shrine and parade route and so on.
